First Impressions

Back again with another restaurant reviewwwwwww and this time it’s a pub! So this wasn’t a spur of the moment affair, we planned this pub visit after seeing a ‘Mates & Dates‘ deal on social media. Neither of us were familiar with the Prince of Peckham but we had seen a few posts on our Instagram timeline of various events that have been held at the venue.

Venue & Atmosphere
Based on Peckham High Street, the venue was pretty easy to locate. There are a number of frequent buses that stop less than 2 minutes away, which is nice and convenient.

When it comes to the decor, Prince of Peckham definitely has the whole pub vibe going on, but it’s a little more intimate and cosy. The layout included sofas, a log fire, the standard pub bar, as well as booths and a seating area. We haven’t been to many pubs, the occasional visit to Whetherspoons for chocolate cake is about as far as we’ve ventured. However, from the little we have experienced, we would say that Prince of Peckham is not your typical pub.

It was a nice chilled night, which may be more of a reflection of the day we visited as we can imagine it’s probably very busy on a weekend or on a day when an event is being held.

Caribbean Cuisine
White Men Can’t Jerk are the chefs behind the Caribbean influenced menu. Certainly not your usual pub grub! The Mates & Dates deal meant that we could order 2 buns and fries to share for £15 which is a pretty good deal as one burger with fries is about £11.

Food Order
Mates & Dates offer
2 buns and fries to share for £15

JERK HALLOUMI BUN (V)
A toasted brioche stuffed with Jerk Halloumi, Roasted peppers, Coleslaw, Salad, Jerk Sauce and Jerk Mayo. Served with a side of Jerk Fries.

FRIED CHICKEN BUN
A toasted brioche stuffed with a buttermilk and Redstripe fried chicken thigh, Coleslaw, Salad, Jerk Sauce and Jerk Mayo. Served with a side of Jerk Fries.

SALTFISH FRITTERS – £6
Crunchy and light batter packed with Saltfish, Fresh Herbs, Peppers and Scotch Bonnets. Served with a Lime and Dill Dip.

Drinks
DARK & STORMZY – £8
A deep and fiery cocktail with Bacardi Carta Negra, lime and ginger beer.
P.O.P £8.50
A tropical party with Zubrowska vodka, pineapple juice, lime and tropical Red Bull.

SALTFISH FRITTERS & FRIES
The fries were part of the deal but the fritters we purchased as extra. We’ve tasted many variations of saltfish fritters and these weren’t too shabby. They were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and full of flavour. The unfortunate let down was that they originally came out cold and we had to send them back. The waitress was apologetic and took the plate away immediately. In terms of taste they could have done with a little more saltfish but we still enjoyed them. The fries were quite standard and unfortunately also came out luke-warm but the waitress rectified this too.

Maria’s Thoughts

JERK HALLOUMI BUN
I opted for the vegetarian burger, I am a huge, huge, huge (for those in the back) HUGE  fan of cheese so was excited to see what this tasted like. The bun was a good size and appeared to have the right filling to bread ratio. It looked delicious. As for the taste it was very mediocre 😕, I like a lot of flavour and expected there to be more to it. Don’t get me wrong it was pleasant but some extra Jerk seasoning or sauce would have given it the kick I was looking for. For someone who isn’t a fan of too much spice, this may go down a treat for you!

DARK & STORMZY
I’m not really keen on the taste of alcohol and if I do decide to drink, it’s usually some kind of colourful sweet cocktail. On this occasion, I was drawn to order the Dark & Stormzy, simply because I love ginger!!……….Buttttt………this cocktail was not for me, I really struggled to finish it. It was probably made exactly how it should be made, so no problems there. I just didn’t enjoy the taste, it was really tangy.  I expected the ginger beer taste to be a lot stronger and for it to be much sweeter –  I probably should have stuck to a mocktail.

Nifesi’s Thoughts

FRIED CHICKEN BUN
I ordered the fried chicken burger but was quite disappointed that the burgers were a lot smaller than I expected. However, surprisingly in all honesty I was full by the end of the meal so maybe this was just a regular case of my eyes always being bigger than my belly. Regardless I pounced on my burger ready to carry my food baby with vigour and happiness. The burger was alright – the chicken was well seasoned on the outside but lacked true flavouring in the breast meat, so once you’ve eaten the edges it got a bit dry. To be honest I can’t think of anything special about it, it did the job and filled my belly, but didn’t excite me along the way.

P.O.P
The vodka is strong!!!!! Lol I like my cocktails, sweet and flavoured, this just tasted very strongly of vodka, ice and some type of sugary syrup. I’m not a fan of red bull, and couldn’t taste much of the pineapple juice. I’m not a connoisseur on cocktails but similar to my burger, there was nothing interesting about P.O.P. If I’m truly honest it was a okay, but definitely tasted better than the dark and stormzy drink.

Final Thoughts

We enjoyed the chilled out vibe that Prince of Peckham offered. It was the perfect location for a mid week catch-up. The burgers were okay but didn’t blow us away. We would visit again maybe to attend one of their events or try something different on the menu.
